The bookend pages make it easier to flip through the paper copies (many of which will end up in archives, libraries, and other scholarly havens). As someone who's read through twelfth-century chant manuscripts, let me tell you, historians love readability.

Besides... if they're completely blank... yank them out and feed the printer again! Everyone wins.</description>
