Instead of the question being "What are you doing ?" It should be What are you selling ? Or Whats the name of your Blog ? Twitter gives me the impression that it is only for popular people who want to advertise there products. Not for your average Joe just looking to meet new friends.

If you know a lot of people who use Twitter then I think it can be a fun way to chat. If you don't, then it is just a waste of time. Twitter just lets you see how many friends you don't have. Stopped using Twitter a few days ago.

that last sentence should have read:
I’m a bit surprised that the recent “like” functionality just recently added to facebook does *NOT* also cause notifications to be sent to you based on updates to the flagged item as that would have covered the “generic subscriptions” requirement.

Although I haven't personally actually checked out twitter, it's exactly for reasons like this that I don't want to. I see its appeal as being entirely user-content-based and once that userbase moves somewhere else, twitter will disappear. My feeling is that it is trivial for other sites to offer the features necessary to duplicate or exceed twitter and so it will only be a matter of time before it dies.

I wrote a post recently about this that might interest you:

Personally, I prefer twhirl as a twitter client.

If you're worried about "missing" stuff on twitter then that might be the source of your irritation. Whenever I actually want to get work done I turn notifications off and when I go back to it I read maybe the last few and quickly scan through for tweets by people who are low volume. All the rest I ignore.

As for the Fail Whale, I have been greeted by it for quite a while now. A few months back twitter became very stable and hardly ever crashes now.

Go read Rand's entry on Twitter, he has a very mature understanding of what it is and how to enjoy it. http://www.randsinrepose.com/archives/2009/02/09/a_twitter_decision.html

Follow those few people that can be consistently funny in 140 characters or less. May I suggest Mike_FTW, fireland,Moltz, scottsimpson, gknauss, warrenellis, lonelysandwich.

I never use Twitterrific or other instant notification tools, especially when I'm working. I just hit the web page whenever my brain hits a speed bumb.
