I live in the United States and by looking at the graphics of local newscasts I guess there is National and International news on the local newscasts in Canada. There is National and International news on local newscasts in the United States. You get prepackaged Satellite news feeds from the network on the local newscasts in the United States. I think the quality of local newscasts in the United States is going down hill. Local Newscasts in the United States sometimes isn't even local anymore. I feel the major US TV News Networks like ABC, CBS, and NBC dictate what outh to go on their local affilates local newscasts. I feel that the American Networks mandate that local newscasts have to have National and International news. I feel the networks force national news and satellite news feeds on their affilates local newscasts. I don't know if the major networks in Canada force national and international news on their TV stations local newscasts. I think that local newscasts outh to have all local news content on them. You have CNN, MSNBC, and FOX News 24/7 around the clock National and International news in the United States. A question to Canadian local newscast viewers do your feel the quality of your local newscasts is going down the tubes? Just a curious question

There were studies done by FAIR a few years back mentioning that a lot of real news - new government policies that actually affected people's lives - had been supplanted by whimsical stories about hurricanes and waterskiing squirrels. That's another angle.

How many hours did you log doing this?

This is a great data as a bench mark study. You should update this in 6 months time to see how the stations are evolving as it seems there will be more changes coming I.e. CBC news

Sports - I would like to see % breakdown of local sports coverage (pro and amateur) .vs National. The Olympics is coming in Feb so this may bias the next 6 months coverage.

We actually did something similar for french stations in Québec city, Sherbrooke and Saguenay at the Centre d'études sur les médias. The study is currently in composition, which means it should be published shortly. I'll make sure you get notice when it comes out.

Of course it isn't 100% local news. But that is what their focus should be. If they did away with the national stuff, I'd be fine with it. We have national news channels, the Internet and more for that. I lost lots of respect for Global when they canned TML. I'll stick to Pulse, umm, CTV Montreal's suppertime news - been watching that since Don McGowan did the weather with a marker board.

Good stuff, Steve. Much more analysis than Mike Boone used to provide when this was his beat. It's no wonder I find CFCF galling to watch, given the over-abundance of sometimes trivial local news on days where the biggest stories are national or international. On the other hand, the other two do a very shoddy job of providing local coverage most of the time, which is reflected here. I note that sports coverage is almost handed to CFCF on a silver platter by the other two - a bad idea in a market where the Habs' exploits are the primary talk of the town about 80 to 100 days of the year.
