CTV cameraman Hugh Haugland, who died in a helicopter crash in August while trying to get video for a story, is being remembered by RTNDA Canada (Radio-Television News Directors’ Association) with an award in his name.

The award, for “creative use of video”, will be presented on an annual basis at the RTNDA’s conference in June.

That’s good news, I think. When Mr. Haugland died I was really impressed by the coverage the local media offered. There really seemed to be a communal aspect to remembering him (ie: cross-network), and it pulled back the curtain a bit on how local reporters viewed their colleague. Great to see him being remembered as part of furthering the craft of video journalism as well.

I was sorry that Bill Hauglands son Hugh had died in the helicopter crash. Has anyone ever tried to have this investigated if it was engine failure or someone may have tampered with the helicopter or someone may have tampered with the helicopter engines. Beiing a fan of Hugh Haugland I hope there will be some form of investigation into his death. The families need answers as to why this happened was there a electrical problem or was this mechanical failure. We will miss you Hugh you will not be forgotten we will always see your smiling face.
