Over the years, a number of journalists got their feet wet (on-the-job training) at The Chronicle as a staffer, freelancer or intern (or all three): CTV's Maya Johnson & Paul Karwatsky; Toronto Star's Joanna Smith; MTL Gazette's Jessica Howard, Brenda O'Farrell, Dave Stubbs; CP's Alexander Panetta & Andy Blatchford; Peterborough Examiner photographer Cliff Skarstedt... even Concordia journalism prof. Peter Downie (of CBC fame) spent some time there...

The http://www.westmountindependent.com has done really well - going from 8 pages to an average of 24-32 now as the Examiner has entered what appears to be terminal decline. David Price also publishes http://www.ndgfreepress.com

I think the thing people like about The Westmount Independent is that its publisher and journos are pretty much locals and so it feels part of the community - and that, together with a lively letters page - are important.

I think there's some sorta other West Island paper but I'm a bit vague on it. David Pink of Hudson seems to have something like that out there. Can't remember the name of it correct me if I'm wrong. Westmount's David Price has a paper that's challenging the Westmount Examiner. Jeez, I'm not good with names of papers I guess. But he seems to be doing okay. I guess the point is that maybe the smaller non-corporate community weeklies could set up on their own. Maybe that's what Kramberger should do, just set up his own paper.

I'm in ConU Journalism right now, and was supposed to do an internship at the Chronicle, like you did, in a few weeks. It's pretty unfortunate that it's come to this point; not because I might lose out on this opportunity, but as a former West Island kid, the one newspaper for families like mine who didn't get the Gazette for a long time is steadily dwindling in quality based on downsizing like this. I remember Raffy and Albert coming to speak to first year Journo kids last year, talking about their experiences. How a year changes things.
