Try The Gazette again. They recently got permission to start paying outstanding freelance invoices, and cheques have already started going out.

I did some work for the Gazette for 5 days between Nov.23 - 27, 2009. I got a cheque from them on Dec.12 for $280. I cashed it about a week later. Approximately a month later on Jan.18 2010 my bank took the $280 from my account. I asked them what was going on and they said there's been a stop payment issued on the cheque by Canwest. I contacted the guy who'd hired me at the Gazette and he said "oh yeah, sorry about that. Contact FTI". I've tried that and all I get is a run-around, being passed from one person who doesn't know anything to another who doesn't know anything. They keep telling me to check their website every week for "futher information". Has anyone checked FTI's website? You've got to be a lawyer to understand the jibberish posted there and I'm NOT a lawyer. I saw an article in the business section of the Gazette a few days ago (Mar.24 or 25) that said that some kind of action had taken place to do with Canwest and "unsecured creditors" had until Apr.16 to file a claim. I just went back to their website ( http://cfcanada.fticonsulting.com/cmi/ ) but didn't see anything about that. So, does anyone out there know what I/we need to do to file a claim ?

I read with great interest your blog about CanWest's creditor protection status. I have been calling it bankruptcy protection to my friends when I complain about the dough the owe me. I satnd corrected but they still owe me money for pieces I did that fell into that blck hole of a time period prior to Jan.8. Yes, I still do freelance stuff for The Gaz and get cheques pronto as before all the shit went down. But one cheque I had hanging around since early Dec of 2009, I did not deposit until later in Jan. and CanWest put a stop payment on it and the bank charged me for it. I was majorly miffed. But subsequent calls to editors and Gaz payroll, has led me to believe, like you, Fagstein, that I ought not to hold my breath while waiting to get the money they owe me. Which as you mention for a freelancer ain't mega-bucks, but still helps in the meagre bank account department. That cheque I left hanging around? Apparently I am not the only one to have done that. Geezus, why wasn't I thinking I should deposit this right away because CanWest may go into creditor protection any day now?

And CanWest owes $54 grand to the Saskatoon Salvation Army. I'm surprised they haven't incurred the wrath of God over that one.

When I wrote the post, I hadn't gotten any information that any of my invoices had been frozen, and I was still an employee. I've since been told that part of one of my invoices has been frozen for articles between Dec. 31 (the date of my last invoice) and Jan. 8 (the date of the creditor protection filing). In total, I'm out $450 for two pieces, which is far less than most people are owed.

How come you don't know if you're going to get paid or not? Either your invoice is frozen or it's not -- or do you get preferential treatment as a former employee?

It's not true that it's only the freelancers who did work between mid-December and January 8th who are not being paid. The period that was unpaid is far longer for many of us. I did work way back in October that was never paid, and I doubt L. Ian MacDonald did over $5000 of work, and Phil Reimer $9000 in a span of six weeks. Why don't you double-check with Gazette management, or the people at Canwest who seem to have been sitting on invoices until creditor protection was filed? I still do not have a satisfactory answer as to why an invoice submitted October 13th was still not paid by January 8th. Something's fishy. And I'm not the only one who thinks so.
