Montreal Geography Trivia No. 45

This week’s Montreal Geography Trivia comes from reader Luc Simard (who is therefore disqualified). Thanks Luc!

Many of you got this one right: It’s a bike path in Verdun. The island in the distance is the western (er, southern) tip of Nuns’ Island. Note that Verdun isn’t listed as one of those communities that forms the West Island, and for good reason. It’s not even close. To get to the nearest listed West Island town (Dorval), you’d have to pass through LaSalle and Lachine.

Ha ha. My four-year-old likes to wander down there to see the boats (and grab an ice cream cone). Hardly the West Island, but the Mile Ender’s probably think it’s the ‘burbs. All people got to do is ask themselves where the best bike paths are in the city…

Kevin, I knew that looked familiar, and I rarely get out to the West Island except for one event I work at in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue. I don’t think most people in Mile-End would consider Verdun a burb (I live just north of there near Jean-Talon Market), it is simply because they have little reason to go to that area EXCEPT for people who enjoy the Lachine bicycle path – just as people closer to Atwater and Lachine public markets might have little reason to come up to Villeray/Petite Patrie.

Although the view is very nice, agree with Kate that the typography and design are very antiquated.

Wonder why on earth they didn’t choose a photo of one of the many views onto the St-Laurent or Rivière-des-Prairies from the communities listed in the guide?

I believe it’s Dorval, and the island picture is Dorval Island. I can’t give a precise location though.

Dunno, but it’s a lurid colour scheme and really bad typography. And who would leave in those bits of leaf that are nearly cropped off on the right, but not quite? I bet the picture’s actually in Lachine, which isn’t listed on the front, but the West Island all looks the same to me.

I can’t quite put my finger on it, but if there’s no penalty for guessing, I’m going to say Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue since the land on the other side of the river appears too close to be the South Shore.

I’m gonna take the tiniest leap of faith ever and say ”somewhere that isn’t even close to the west island”

what really matters is that the continuous riverside bike path in Lachine/Lasalle/Verdun (say, east of Pont Mercier) is one of the nicest bike paths anywhere. And that’s why they took the picture here, because there ain’t no riverside path in the west island after Lachine, so cyclists have to ride on Lakeshore blvd. Yuck.

Why? Lakeshore is a very nice ride…

      My best ride ever when there was very strong west winds (60-80 km/h), so I took the commuter train to St-Anne-de-Bellevue and sailed right back into town… :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
