Media News Digest: Ezra appeals to Justin, deal on Torstar culture review, Rogers getting a new CEO

News about news

  • Ezra Levant is appealing to his favourite shiny pony, Justin Trudeau, after The Rebel was barred from covering a UN climate change conference because it’s an “advocacy media”. Canadian journalism organizations are supporting The Rebel, and an organization like the UN should be as open as possible within reason, though no one could really argue that The Rebel isn’t more about advocacy than journalism.

Great weekly post as always. In the TV section, you forgot to include Corus’ planned rebranding of W Movies to Cooking Channel. Unless that is being saved until next week’s Media News Digest.

Do you know if it’s going to be the original US version of The Cooking Channel, or we get Cooking Channel Canada? Some of the Canadian produced shows that airs on Food Network Canada, airs in the US on The Cooking Channel.

This will be Cooking Channel Canada, though no original programming has been announced for it yet.

I thought Channel 12 Durham is becoming a Global station outright…

“Starting Monday, October 31, the show will have a fresh look featuring new branding as Global Durham. It will air alongside other Global programming including Toronto’s Global News at 5:30 & 6 and Global National.”

No. The station will rebrand its news as Global News, but is keeping CTV daytime, primetime and late-night programming, except for CTV National News. This, according to its schedule for the week of Oct. 31.

“Joey Elias’s comedy show is now being syndicated to NewsTalk 1010 CFRB in Toronto.”

Actually, syndicated would suggest it was put out there for sale and someone bought the rights. This seems much more like “bell wants to fill airtime at 1010 in Toronto” so they are using the Montreal comedy show.

This is much more of the horrible idea of limiting voices in broadcasting. Instead of having a Toronto based comedy show with it’s own host and it’s own twist on things, Bell cheaps out. Want to bet Joey doesn’t get paid a penny more for it?

Meh. You can pretty much apply this to all legacy media at this point.
