It’s not just me who’s been talking to English-language broadcasters in Montreal. Italian community magazine Panoram Italia has been profiling members of its community who have jobs in the media in Montreal. The magazine’s December/January issue is devoted to it, with CBC’s Sabrina Marandola and CJAD/CTV’s Laura Casella on the cover.
Going through the list, you can see how prolific they are here. Morning show hosts, weather presenters, journalists. Good thing they come in peace (and pizza).
- Sabrina Marandola (CBC) and Laura Casella (CJAD/CTV)
- Natasha Gargiulo and Freeway Frank Depalo (Virgin Radio) (Gargiulo was also profiled in 2011)
- Cousin Vinny Barrucco (The Beat)
- Frank Cavallaro (CBC)
- Rick Campanelli (Global’s ET Canada)
- Terry DiMonte (CHOM)
- Tony Marinaro (TSN 690)
- Mose Persico (CTV)
- Davide Gentile (Radio-Canada)
- Franco Nuovo (Radio-Canada)
- Marianna Simeone
How did Rick Campanelli make this list of Italian Montreal broadcasters? He’s based in Toronto, and born & raised in Hamilton. Marianna Simeone doesn’t have a current media gig, even as a occasional freelancer(I last saw her as moderator the recent Provincial Liberal leadership’s only English language debate at Concordia)?
It’s not a list of Italian Montreal broadcasters, though it’s obviously heavily biased in that direction.
You took the Rick Campanelli profile from the Toronto edition of Panoram Italia & it’s not related to the Dec/Jan Montreal issue cover story covering Italian Canadians in Media. Of the ones you listed, he’s the only one with zero connection to Montreal media. I read the Italian Canadians in Media cover story when the issue first came out(Rick Campanelli was not included in the profiles).
Those are all pretty big positions they are filling. Like the article says, good to see Italians in a good light for once.
I’m sure all these people had to work very hard to break the stereotype.
Good on them!
It never occurred to me that Terry DiMonte could be considered Italian. Does that mean Dan Delmar could be considered a Francophone since his mother is French?
How did they forget Liza Frulla?
You didn’t mention Radio-Canada’s Davide Gentile in the issue / article chastising Italian Montrealers living in ghettoes for not speaking French and English properly. Condescending since he considers himself half-Italian ( devoid of ghetto sins) but at least he pronounces his last name correctly as opposed to Marandola.
When will the Armenian community showcase André Arthur, (yes, he is Armenian), Danielle Hamadjian (spelling?) and Lucy Hanassian ( spelling?) from CFCF weather/Travel Travel dept.
Italians are everywhere? Probably even some in Italy too.
I imagine most Canadians have a good impression on Italian – Canadians.
Mario Beaulieu on the other hand…
I am baffled that you include Marianna Simeone amongst one the Canadian Italian broadcasters. Her accent is so strong that she would be a perfect typecast for the Sopranos.
Domenic Fazioli from Global did not make the list? Wow.
